Who owns Fedco?

Fedco is a unique cooperative seed company based in the United States. Unlike traditional businesses, we do not have an individual owner or beneficiary. Instead, our ownership is distributed among the people who support and contribute to our cooperative. In fact, our ownership is divided between two main groups: consumers and worker members.

Consumers play a significant role in the ownership of Fedco, as they hold a majority stake of 60% in the cooperative. This means that the people who purchase and use our products have a significant say in how our cooperative is run and what products we offer. This consumer ownership allows us to prioritize the needs and preferences of our customers, as they are the ones who ultimately benefit from our services.

On the other hand, worker members make up the remaining 40% of the ownership in Fedco. These are the individuals who are directly involved in the day-to-day operations of the cooperative, including seed production, packaging, and distribution. As worker members, they have a direct stake in the success and sustainability of the cooperative. This ownership model ensures that the people who are most involved in the work of Fedco also have a say in its decision-making processes.

One of the advantages of this cooperative ownership structure is that it allows us to prioritize the well-being of our customers and workers over maximizing profits. Unlike traditional businesses, where profit is often the primary goal, Fedco’s cooperative model allows us to focus on providing high-quality products and services that meet the needs of our customers. This cooperative structure also promotes a sense of community and collaboration among all those involved in the cooperative, fostering a strong sense of ownership and shared responsibility.

Being a cooperative, Fedco operates based on the principles of democracy and equality. Each member, whether a consumer or worker, has an equal vote in the decision-making processes of the cooperative. This ensures that everyone’s voice is heard and that decisions are made collectively. As a cooperative, we strive to be transparent and inclusive, encouraging active participation from all members.

In my personal experience with Fedco, I have found the cooperative model to be highly effective and empowering. As a consumer, I appreciate knowing that my purchases not only support a business but also contribute to a larger community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about gardening and sustainable agriculture. The cooperative ownership structure ensures that my interests and preferences are taken into account, and I feel a sense of ownership and pride in being part of such a unique organization.

To summarize, Fedco is owned by a cooperative made up of consumers and worker members. Consumers hold 60% of the ownership, while worker members hold 40%. This cooperative ownership structure allows us to prioritize the needs of our customers and workers, fostering a sense of community, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
