Which onions are best for long-term storage?

When it comes to choosing onions for long-term storage, it is important to select varieties that have been specifically bred for this purpose. Not all onions are created equal when it comes to their storage capabilities. Over the years, I have had success with several varieties that have proven to be excellent for storing over the winter months.

One of my go-to varieties for long-term storage is the ‘White Sweet Spanish’ onion. This variety has a mild and sweet flavor, making it versatile in cooking, and it also has the ability to keep well for an extended period. I have found that when properly cured and stored in a cool and dry location, the ‘White Sweet Spanish’ onions can last well into the winter months without spoiling or sprouting.

Another reliable option for long-term storage is the ‘Downing Yellow Globe’ onion. This variety has a beautiful golden color and a slightly stronger flavor compared to the ‘White Sweet Spanish.’ However, it still maintains its quality and freshness for an extended period if handled correctly. I have harvested and stored ‘Downing Yellow Globe’ onions that have lasted me well into the spring without any signs of decay or deterioration.

For those who prefer red onions, the ‘Southport Red Globe’ is an excellent choice for long-term storage. This variety has a vibrant red color and a slightly milder taste compared to other red onion varieties. I have found that when properly cured and stored in a cool and dark location, the ‘Southport Red Globe’ onions can easily last through the winter months, allowing me to enjoy their delicious flavor in various dishes all season long.

However, it is worth mentioning that not all onion varieties are suitable for long-term storage. One standout example is the ‘White Bermuda’ onion. While this variety is incredibly flavorful and a favorite among many gardeners, it is not ideal for extended storage. ‘White Bermuda’ onions tend to have a higher moisture content, which makes them prone to sprouting and spoiling faster than other varieties. Therefore, I would recommend enjoying ‘White Bermuda’ onions fresh during the growing season rather than attempting to store them for an extended period.

When it comes to choosing onions for long-term storage, selecting varieties bred specifically for this purpose is crucial. Based on my personal experiences, the ‘White Sweet Spanish,’ ‘Downing Yellow Globe,’ and ‘Southport Red Globe’ onions have all proven to be excellent choices that can be stored successfully over the winter months. Remember to properly cure and store your onions in a cool and dry location to ensure their longevity.
