What is the potting mix for Epidendrum?

When it comes to potting media for epidendrums, we have found that a combination of fine and medium grade fir bark works well. We typically mix these two types of bark in equal volumes to create a balanced potting mix.

Additionally, we like to add about 15 to 20 percent coarse perlite to the mix. This helps to improve drainage and aeration in the potting media, which is important for the health and growth of epidendrums.

In our experience, epidendrums thrive in an open mix that allows for good air circulation around the roots. This is why we prefer using fir bark, as it provides a loose and airy texture.

It’s worth mentioning that the specific potting mix for epidendrums may vary depending on individual growing conditions and preferences. Some growers may choose to add other ingredients such as sphagnum moss or coconut coir to the mix.

However, we have found great success with the combination of fine and medium grade fir bark along with perlite. This mix provides a good balance of moisture retention and drainage for our epidendrums.

When potting epidendrums, we ensure that the mix is thoroughly moistened before planting. This helps to settle the bark and create a stable environment for the roots.

During the growing season, we water our epidendrums regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. This watering practice, along with the open mix, has helped us maintain healthy and vibrant epidendrum plants.

The potting mix for epidendrums that we have found successful is a combination of fine and medium grade fir bark, mixed in equal volumes, along with 15 to 20 percent coarse perlite. This open mix provides good drainage and aeration for the roots, resulting in thriving epidendrum plants.
