What is the difference between Mountain Fresh and Mountain Fresh Plus?

Mountain Fresh Plus is a variety of tomato that is specifically bred to have added protection against Nematodes, which are troublesome pests that can damage tomato crops. This variety is very similar to the widely used Mountain Fresh tomato, but it has the advantage of Nematode resistance.

When it comes to the physical characteristics of the plants, both Mountain Fresh and Mountain Fresh Plus are large determinate vines. This means that they have a predetermined growth pattern, with a main stem that stops growing once it reaches a certain height and produces fruit along the length of the vine. This determinate growth habit can be advantageous for gardeners who prefer more compact plants, as they are easier to manage and support.

One of the key differences between the two varieties is the level of Nematode resistance. Nematodes are microscopic worms that live in the soil and can cause significant damage to the roots of tomato plants. They can stunt growth, reduce yields, and even kill the plants. Mountain Fresh Plus has been bred to have resistance against these pests, which means that it is less likely to be affected by Nematode infestations compared to the regular Mountain Fresh variety.

In terms of fruit production, both varieties offer good cover and produce good yields. However, Mountain Fresh Plus has the added advantage of producing extra-large fruit. The larger size of the tomatoes can be appealing to gardeners who prefer larger fruits for slicing or cooking purposes.

In my personal experience, I have grown both Mountain Fresh and Mountain Fresh Plus varieties in my own garden. I have found that the Nematode resistance of Mountain Fresh Plus has been a significant advantage, especially in areas where Nematode infestations are common. The plants have shown healthier growth and have been less affected by Nematode damage compared to the regular Mountain Fresh variety.

The main difference between Mountain Fresh and Mountain Fresh Plus is the added Nematode resistance in the Plus variety. This resistance can be a valuable trait for gardeners who want to protect their tomato crops from these troublesome pests. Additionally, Mountain Fresh Plus offers the benefit of producing extra-large fruit, making it a versatile and desirable option for tomato growers.
