What is the difference between Lantana camara and lantana Depressa?

Lantana camara and Lantana depressa are two different species of plants within the Lantana genus. While they may have some similarities, there are several key differences between the two.

1. Appearance: One of the most noticeable differences between Lantana camara and Lantana depressa is their size and growth habit. Lantana camara is a larger and more robust plant, often reaching heights of 3-6 feet. It has a bushy growth habit with sprawling branches. On the other hand, Lantana depressa is a smaller, low-growing shrub that typically grows to a height of only 1-2 feet. It forms a dense mat-like appearance with its branches.

2. Flower Color: Another distinguishing characteristic is the flower color. Lantana camara flowers are highly variable in color, ranging from yellow, pink, purple, lavender to orangey-red. This variation in flower color is a result of natural genetic diversity within the species. In contrast, Lantana depressa always produces bright yellow flowers. So, if you come across a Lantana plant with yellow flowers, it is most likely Lantana depressa.

3. Native Range: Lantana camara is native to tropical regions of the Americas, including Central and South America. It has been widely cultivated and naturalized in many other parts of the world, including subtropical and warm temperate regions. Lantana depressa, on the other hand, is native to specific regions within Florida, USA, particularly in pinelands and coastal areas. It is considered an endemic species, meaning it is found only in a specific geographic area.

4. Environmental Adaptability: Lantana camara is known for its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. It is considered invasive in many regions due to its aggressive growth habit and ability to outcompete native vegetation. Lantana depressa, being native to specific habitats, is adapted to the local environmental conditions of Florida, particularly in sandy soils and coastal areas. It may not be as adaptable or resilient in other regions as Lantana camara.

In my personal experience, I have come across both Lantana camara and Lantana depressa while working in gardens and landscapes. Lantana camara is often used as a colorful and low-maintenance ornamental plant due to its vibrant flower colors and ability to attract pollinators. However, it can become invasive if not properly managed. Lantana depressa, being a native species, is sometimes included in native plant gardens to support local biodiversity and provide habitat for native wildlife.

Lantana camara and Lantana depressa are distinct species within the Lantana genus. They differ in size, growth habit, flower color, native range, and environmental adaptability. It is important to consider these differences when selecting and managing these plants in gardens and landscapes.
