What is a variegated willow?

A variegated willow, specifically the Salix integra ‘Hakuro-nishiki’, is a stunning shrub that adds a touch of elegance to any garden or landscape. Its branches grow in a slightly upright manner, creating a softer fountain-like shape as they lengthen. This unique growth habit gives the shrub a graceful and eye-catching appearance.

One of the most striking features of the variegated willow is its leaves. They are beautifully mottled in shades of white, pink, and green, creating a visually appealing contrast. As the leaves mature, they transition to a lovely combination of green and cream, adding further interest to the plant.

Not only are the leaves of the variegated willow visually appealing, but the stems also contribute to its overall beauty. The stems of this shrub turn a striking red color, which provides a dramatic contrast against the foliage. This vibrant coloration further enhances the overall attractiveness of the plant.

In terms of care, the variegated willow is generally low-maintenance and easy to grow. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry spells, to keep the plant healthy and vibrant.

The variegated willow can be used in various ways in the garden or landscape. Its unique growth habit and beautiful foliage make it an excellent choice for creating focal points or adding interest to borders and beds. It can also be grown as a standalone specimen or incorporated into mixed plantings for a dynamic and visually appealing display.

Personally, I have had the pleasure of incorporating variegated willows in several of my landscaping projects. One particular project involved creating a serene and tranquil corner in a client’s backyard. The variegated willow served as a stunning centerpiece, with its graceful branches and eye-catching foliage providing a sense of elegance and tranquility to the space. The vibrant red stems added a pop of color, creating a visually striking contrast against the surrounding greenery.
