What is a mounted orchid?

A mounted orchid is a type of orchid plant that is grown on a piece of wood or other similar material, mimicking its natural growth habit in its native habitat. Instead of being potted in traditional soil or a potting mix, the orchid is attached or mounted onto the wood, allowing it to cling and grow just like it would on a tree branch.

One of the main reasons for mounting orchids is to provide them with a more natural environment in which they can thrive. In the wild, orchids are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants or trees without deriving nutrients from them. By mounting orchids on wood, we recreate this natural setting and allow the orchids to grow in a way that closely resembles their natural habitat.

There are several benefits to growing orchids on mounts. Firstly, it allows for better air circulation around the roots, which is crucial for their health. When mounted, the roots are exposed to air and can dry out between waterings, preventing them from becoming waterlogged and prone to rot. This promotes healthy root growth and reduces the risk of fungal or bacterial diseases.

Additionally, mounting orchids can lead to faster and more vigorous growth. The roots are exposed to more light and air, which can stimulate better nutrient uptake and photosynthesis. This often results in larger and more vibrant flowers, as well as increased overall plant growth.

In terms of care, mounted orchids require regular watering or misting to ensure they receive enough moisture. Depending on the specific orchid species and environmental conditions, they may need to be watered or misted 5 to 7 times a week. It’s important to monitor the moisture levels and adjust the watering frequency accordingly, as different orchids have different water requirements.

When watering a mounted orchid, it’s best to thoroughly wet the roots and the mount itself, allowing the water to penetrate and hydrate the entire plant. This can be done by immersing the mount in a bucket of water or by using a spray bottle to mist the roots and mount. It’s important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other issues. Proper drainage is key to prevent water from pooling around the roots.

In addition to regular watering, mounted orchids may benefit from occasional fertilization to provide them with essential nutrients. This can be done by applying a diluted orchid fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It’s important to avoid over-fertilizing, as this can damage the orchid’s roots and lead to nutrient burn.

Growing orchids on mounts can be a rewarding and visually appealing way to cultivate these beautiful plants. With the right conditions and care, mounted orchids can thrive and produce stunning blooms, adding a touch of natural beauty to any space. Whether you choose to mount your orchids or grow them in pots, it’s important to understand their specific needs and provide them with the proper care to ensure their success.
