What is a bullhorn pepper?

A bullhorn pepper, scientifically known as Capsicum annuum, is a type of pepper that is characterized by its long, tapered, and slightly curved shape, resembling the horn of a bull. These peppers can grow up to 20cm in length and have a vibrant red color when fully ripe. They are also sometimes referred to as “bull horn red” peppers.

The bullhorn pepper plant is a tall and robust plant, with dark green foliage that provides a beautiful backdrop to the vibrant red fruits. The plant itself can reach heights of several feet, making it an impressive addition to any garden or landscape.

One of the great features of bullhorn peppers is their versatility in the kitchen. These peppers can be harvested and enjoyed at various stages of ripeness. When harvested green, they have a slightly milder flavor and are often used in savory dishes, stir-fries, and salads. However, when left to fully ripen and turn red, the flavor of the bullhorn pepper becomes sweeter and more intense. This makes them ideal for roasting, grilling, stuffing, or even pickling.

In my personal experience, I have found that bullhorn peppers are a fantastic addition to stuffed pepper recipes. The elongated shape of the pepper allows for more filling to be added, creating a delicious and visually appealing dish. The sweetness of the red bullhorn peppers perfectly balances the savory filling, resulting in a flavorful and satisfying meal.

Additionally, the bullhorn pepper’s unique shape makes it an excellent choice for grilling. The curved nature of the pepper allows it to be easily placed on a grill and cooked to perfection. Whether enjoyed on its own as a side dish or incorporated into a larger grilled vegetable medley, the bullhorn pepper adds a burst of flavor and color to any barbecue.

Another benefit of bullhorn peppers is their suitability for pickling. The long shape of the pepper allows it to be easily sliced or diced, making it a convenient option for preserving in vinegar or brine. Pickled bullhorn peppers can add a tangy and spicy kick to sandwiches, salads, or antipasto platters.

Bullhorn peppers are a versatile and flavorful variety of pepper. Their long, tapered shape and vibrant red color make them visually appealing in any garden or landscape. Whether enjoyed green or red, these peppers can be used in a variety of culinary applications, including stuffing, grilling, and pickling. Their sweet and slightly spicy flavor adds depth and complexity to a wide range of dishes, making them a must-have for any pepper enthusiast.
