What can I use instead of a cloche?

When it comes to finding alternatives to cloches in the garden, there are several options to consider. One option that comes to mind is using old plastic bottles. These bottles can be easily repurposed and used as makeshift cloches to protect your plants. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when using plastic bottle cloches.

Firstly, it is important to note that using recycled materials in the garden is a great way to reduce waste and be more environmentally friendly. Repurposing old plastic bottles as cloches is a creative way to give these items a second life and keep them out of the landfill. So, from an eco-conscious perspective, using plastic bottle cloches can be a good choice.

However, there are some drawbacks to using plastic bottle cloches. One issue is that they need to be removed quickly. Unlike traditional cloches, which can be left in place for extended periods, plastic bottle cloches should be removed as soon as the weather improves or the plants have grown enough to no longer require protection. This is because plastic bottle cloches can trap heat and moisture, which can lead to excessive condensation and create a breeding ground for fungal diseases.

To mitigate the condensation issue, it is important to ensure proper ventilation when using plastic bottle cloches. This can be achieved by cutting several small holes in the top and bottom of the bottles to allow for air circulation. Additionally, the bottles should be well-anchored to prevent them from being blown away by strong winds. This can be done by burying the bottom portion of the bottle in the soil or securing them with stakes.

In my personal experience, I have used plastic bottle cloches to protect young seedlings from frost and cold temperatures. While they were effective in providing a temporary shelter for the plants, I did encounter issues with condensation. The excessive moisture buildup inside the bottles caused some of the seedlings to rot. Therefore, I had to monitor the cloches closely and remove them as soon as the weather improved.

Plastic bottle cloches can be a viable alternative to traditional bell cloches in the garden. They are a great way to repurpose old plastic bottles and reduce waste. However, it is important to be aware of the potential issues with condensation and to ensure proper ventilation and anchoring. Plastic bottle cloches should be used as temporary solutions and removed as soon as they are no longer needed.
