What are mounding perennials?

Mounding perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden or landscape. These plants have a unique growth pattern, growing both vertically and horizontally, which gives them a rounded appearance. I’ve personally found that mounding plants serve as a fantastic transition in the landscape, bridging the gap between strongly upright plants and low, trailing plants.

One of my favorite mounding perennials is the catmint (Nepeta). This plant produces beautiful spikes of lavender-blue flowers that attract bees and butterflies. It forms dense mounds of foliage that can reach a height of about 1-2 feet and spread outwards, creating a lovely rounded shape. Catmint is also known for its aromatic leaves, which release a pleasant scent when brushed against. It is a great choice for borders or edging, as it adds a soft, billowy texture to the landscape.

Another popular mounding perennial is the dwarf fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’). This ornamental grass forms compact, rounded clumps of arching foliage that can grow to be around 2-3 feet in height. In late summer to early fall, it produces feathery, bottlebrush-like flower spikes that add movement and texture to the garden. The dwarf fountain grass is a versatile plant that can be used as a focal point, in mass plantings, or even in containers.

One mounding perennial that I’ve found to be particularly striking is the Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum). This fern has delicate, arching fronds that are a beautiful silvery-green color with hints of burgundy and purple. It forms low, spreading mounds that can reach a height of about 1-2 feet. The Japanese painted fern is perfect for adding a touch of elegance and texture to shady areas of the garden.

When it comes to mounding perennials, it’s important to consider their growth habits and requirements. Some mounding plants may prefer full sun, while others may thrive in partial shade. It’s also important to provide them with well-draining soil and to water them regularly, especially during dry spells.

Mounding perennials are a fantastic addition to any garden or landscape. They offer a unique growth habit that combines vertical and horizontal growth, creating a rounded appearance. Whether you choose catmint, dwarf fountain grass, Japanese painted fern, or any other mounding perennial, these plants will add beauty, texture, and dimension to your outdoor space.
