Is a holiday cactus the same as a Christmas cactus?

A holiday cactus is not the same as a Christmas cactus. While they are both members of the Schlumgera genus and are often referred to interchangeably, there are subtle differences between the two.

1. Leaf Shape: The most noticeable difference between the two is the shape of their leaves. The Thanksgiving cactus, also known as Schlumgera truncata, has leaves with very pointed and claw-shaped projections on the edges. These projections give the leaves a more jagged appearance. On the other hand, the Christmas cactus, also known as Schlumgera bridgesti, has leaves with projections that are more scalloped or tear drop-shaped. These projections are generally softer and less pronounced compared to those of the Thanksgiving cactus.

2. Flowering Time: Another difference lies in their flowering time. The Thanksgiving cactus typically blooms in late fall, around the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States hence its name. Its vibrant flowers come in various colors, including shades of pink, red, purple, and white. On the other hand, the Christmas cactus blooms a bit later, usually around the Christmas season, hence its name. Its flowers are also colorful and come in similar shades as the Thanksgiving cactus.

3. Growth Habit: While both cacti have similar growth habits, the Thanksgiving cactus tends to have a more upright and branching growth pattern. Its stems often arch outward, creating a cascading effect. In contrast, the Christmas cactus has a more pendant growth habit, with its stems hanging down rather than arching outward.

4. Origin and Cultivation: The Thanksgiving cactus is native to the coastal mountains of Brazil, while the Christmas cactus is native to the coastal mountains of southeastern Brazil. However, both cacti are popular houseplants and are widely cultivated around the world. They are known for their ability to thrive indoors with proper care, including bright but indirect light, well-draining soil, and regular watering.

While the Thanksgiving cactus and Christmas cactus are closely related and share many similarities, they can be distinguished by their leaf shape, flowering time, growth habit, and origin. These differences may be subtle to the casual observer, but to gardening enthusiasts, they add to the unique appeal of each cactus.
