How much light does Monstera need?

Monstera plants, like most plants, require a certain amount of light to thrive. In the case of Monstera species, they typically need 8 to 10 hours of bright, filtered, or indirect light per day. While it is true that Monstera can survive in low light conditions, they may not grow as vigorously or exhibit their full potential.

When we talk about bright, filtered, or indirect light, we mean providing the plant with light that is not direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can be too harsh for Monstera leaves and may lead to sunburn or scorching. So, it’s best to place your Monstera in a spot where it receives bright light, but not direct sunlight.

One way to achieve this is by placing your Monstera near a window that receives bright, indirect light. North or east-facing windows are often suitable for Monstera as they provide sufficient light without the risk of direct sunlight. If you have a south or west-facing window, you may need to use sheer curtains or blinds to filter the light and prevent it from being too intense for your Monstera.

If you don’t have access to a suitable window or your space lacks natural light, you can also use artificial lighting to meet your Monstera’s light requirements. LED grow lights or fluorescent lights can be used to provide the necessary light for your plant. Position the lights a few feet above the plant and keep them on for 8 to 10 hours a day to simulate natural daylight.

It’s important to note that different Monstera species may have slightly different light requirements. For example, Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant, can tolerate lower light conditions compared to some other species. However, even for Monstera deliciosa, providing bright, indirect light will ensure optimal growth and health.

In my personal experience, I have found that placing my Monstera near a north-facing window has worked well. The plant receives bright, indirect light throughout the day, and it has grown beautifully. On the other hand, I made the mistake of placing a Monstera in a corner of my room that received very little light, and the plant struggled to grow, with its leaves turning pale and smaller over time.

To summarize, while Monstera plants can survive in low light conditions, they thrive when provided with 8 to 10 hours of bright, filtered, or indirect light per day. Placing them near a north or east-facing window or using artificial lighting can help meet their light requirements. By ensuring they receive the right amount of light, you can help your Monstera grow and flourish.
