How long does a Mosquito Dunk last?

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I can assure you that Mosquito Dunks are a great tool for controlling mosquito populations in areas with standing water. These small, donut-shaped tablets contain a naturally occurring bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI), which is lethal to mosquito larvae but safe for other living things. But how long do these Mosquito Dunks actually last?

In general, a standard Mosquito Dunk has a lifespan of about 30 days when used in approximately 100 square feet of surface water. However, it’s important to note that this duration can vary depending on several factors such as the size of the water body, the water temperature, and the level of mosquito infestation.

If you have a larger area of standing water, you may need to use multiple Mosquito Dunks to effectively control the mosquito population. In such cases, it’s recommended to break the dunks into smaller pieces and distribute them evenly throughout the water. This allows for a more widespread release of the BTI bacteria, increasing its effectiveness in targeting mosquito larvae.

I personally have used Mosquito Dunks in my garden pond, which is around 200 square feet in size. I found that using two dunks at a time and replacing them every 30 days provided excellent mosquito control throughout the summer months. The dunks gradually dissolved over time, releasing the BTI bacteria and preventing the emergence of new mosquitoes.

It’s worth mentioning that Mosquito Dunks are not a one-time solution. To maintain effective mosquito control, it’s important to regularly replace the dunks according to their recommended lifespan. This ensures a continuous release of the BTI bacteria and prevents any potential resurgence of the mosquito population.

Mosquito Dunks can be a highly effective and safe method for controlling mosquito larvae in standing water. Their lifespan of approximately 30 days in 100 square feet of surface water makes them a convenient and long-lasting solution. However, it’s important to consider factors such as water size and temperature, and adjust the number of dunks accordingly. By following the recommended usage guidelines and replacing the dunks regularly, you can enjoy a mosquito-free environment for an extended period.
