How can you tell a gum tree?

When it comes to identifying a Sweet Gum tree, there are several key characteristics to look for. One of the most distinctive features is the star-shaped leaf with five points. This leaf shape sets it apart from many other tree species and makes it quite easy to recognize. As you examine the leaf, you will notice that it has a saw-tooth or serrated edge. This adds to its unique appearance and gives it a slightly jagged outline.

Another important aspect to note is the color of the Sweet Gum tree’s leaves. On the upper side of the leaf, you will typically find a deep, dark green color. This rich hue adds to the tree’s overall beauty and makes it stand out in a natural setting. On the under-side of the leaf, however, you will notice a contrasting pale green color. This difference in coloration is a helpful clue when trying to identify a Sweet Gum tree.

During the Autumn season, Sweet Gum trees undergo a stunning transformation. The leaves, which were once a vibrant green, begin to change color. The most common colors you will see are reddish-purple or orange. This change in foliage is a sight to behold and adds a touch of warmth and beauty to the landscape. If you come across a tree with star-shaped leaves and notice these autumnal hues, there’s a good chance you’ve stumbled upon a Sweet Gum tree.

In addition to the leaf shape and color, it’s worth noting the overall size and shape of the tree itself. Sweet Gum trees typically grow to be quite tall, reaching heights of 60 to 75 feet. They have a relatively narrow, columnar shape, which helps distinguish them from other broadleaf trees in the area. The bark of a mature Sweet Gum tree is deeply furrowed and can have a grayish-brown color, adding to its distinct appearance.

When identifying a Sweet Gum tree, it’s important to consider all of these characteristics together. By taking into account the star-shaped leaf with a serrated edge, the contrasting upper and under-side leaf colors, the autumnal color change, and the overall size and shape of the tree, you can confidently recognize a Sweet Gum tree in a variety of settings.

Personal experience: I have had the pleasure of encountering many Sweet Gum trees throughout my years of gardening and landscaping. One particular memory that stands out is when I was walking through a park during the autumn season. As I strolled along the path, I noticed a vibrant display of reddish-purple and orange leaves scattered across the ground. Looking up, I saw a majestic Sweet Gum tree towering above me, adorned with its unique star-shaped leaves. The sight was truly breathtaking and served as a reminder of the beauty that nature has to offer.
