Does the Gaura spread?

Gaura, also known as the butterfly bush or wandflower, is a beautiful plant that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. One of the common questions that gardeners ask is whether Gaura spreads. Well, the answer is yes, Gaura does spread, but it is not an invasive plant that will take over your entire garden.

When I first planted Gaura in my flower bed, I was amazed at how quickly it started to spread. The delicate stems and foliage seemed to reach out in all directions, creating a stunning display of white or pink flowers. It was a sight to behold!

However, I soon realized that Gaura is not a plant that will take over your garden like some other invasive species. It does spread, but it does so in a controlled manner. The plant will gradually fill out its allotted space, creating a beautiful, bushy appearance. It is not a plant that will send out runners and take over neighboring plants or areas of the garden.

In terms of size, Gaura typically grows to a height and spread of around 60cm (24 inches). This makes it an ideal choice for flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. Its compact size allows it to fit well within a garden design without overpowering other plants or becoming a nuisance.

One of the reasons why Gaura is such a popular choice for gardeners is its ability to attract butterflies and other pollinators. The delicate, airy flowers of Gaura provide nectar for butterflies and other beneficial insects, making it a great addition to any wildlife garden. I have personally witnessed the joy of seeing butterflies fluttering around my Gaura plants, adding a touch of magic to my garden.

To sum up, Gaura is a spreading plant but not in an invasive way. It will gradually fill out its allotted space, creating a beautiful display of flowers without taking over your garden. Its compact size and ability to attract butterflies make it an excellent choice for flower beds and borders in cottage and informal gardens. So, if you’re looking to add some elegance and wildlife appeal to your garden, Gaura is definitely worth considering.
