Does red top grass make good hay?

Redtop grass can be a viable option for producing hay, especially in soils that are typically unproductive. This is because redtop has the ability to thrive in these difficult conditions and still provide fair hay yields. I have personally witnessed the success of redtop grass in improving the productivity of such soils.

One of the key factors in increasing hay yields with redtop grass is the application of lime and fertilizer based on a soil test. This helps to address any deficiencies in the soil and provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth. By following the recommendations of a soil test, you can ensure that the redtop grass receives the optimal amount of lime and fertilizer, which in turn leads to improved hay yields.

It is worth noting that the overall hay yields of redtop grass tend to be on the lower side. This means that you may not achieve the same high yields as you would with other grass varieties. However, redtop grass compensates for this by its ability to grow well in unproductive soils. In my experience, even though the yields may not be as high as with other grasses, redtop still provides a valuable source of hay.

One challenge with redtop grass is its limited fall regrowth. This means that after the initial hay harvest, you may not see significant regrowth in the fall. This can limit the number of hay cuttings you are able to obtain in a season. However, by carefully managing the timing of your hay harvest and allowing enough time for regrowth, you can optimize the yield potential of redtop grass.

While redtop grass may not produce the highest hay yields compared to other grass varieties, it is a suitable option for unproductive soils. By applying lime and fertilizer based on a soil test, you can further enhance the hay yields. It is important to manage the limited fall regrowth of redtop grass to maximize the number of hay cuttings. I have found redtop to be a valuable grass for hay production, particularly in challenging soil conditions.
