Does Perovskia attract bees?

Perovskia, also known as Russian sage, is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is widely recognized as a good plant for attracting bees. Being part of the mint family, it shares similar characteristics with other plants in this family that are known to be highly attractive to pollinators.

Native to regions such as Eastern Russia, Western China, and the Himalayas, Perovskia naturally grows in areas where bees are abundant. Honeybees, in particular, are the primary pollinators of this plant, although other species of bees may also be attracted to its nectar-rich flowers. It is not uncommon to see bees buzzing around Perovskia, busily collecting nectar and pollen.

One of the reasons why Perovskia is so appealing to bees is its abundant and showy flowers. The plant produces tall spikes of lavender-blue flowers, which stand out in the garden and are easily spotted by bees in search of food. The flowers are rich in nectar, providing an ample source of energy for bees. Additionally, the tubular shape of the flowers makes them suitable for bees to access the nectar.

In my personal experience with Perovskia, I have witnessed the constant presence of bees around the plant. I have observed honeybees, bumblebees, and even smaller solitary bees visiting the flowers throughout the day. The buzzing sound created by the bees is a delightful reminder of the plant’s attractiveness to these important pollinators.

It is worth noting that while Perovskia primarily attracts bees, it may also attract other pollinators such as butterflies and moths. These insects, with their long proboscises, can also access the nectar within the tubular flowers. The presence of a diverse range of pollinators further highlights the value of Perovskia as a beneficial plant in the garden.

Perovskia is a highly attractive plant for bees, thanks to its nectar-rich flowers and its membership in the mint family. It is a joy to observe the constant activity of bees around this plant, and its ability to attract a variety of pollinators adds to its value in supporting biodiversity in the garden. If you are looking to attract bees to your garden or landscape, Perovskia is an excellent choice.
