Does paprika yarrow spread?

Achillea millefolium ‘Paprika’ is a variety of yarrow that can spread easily. It has beautiful dusty red flowers that typically start blooming in late spring and continue throughout the summer. The flowers add a vibrant pop of color to any garden or landscape.

One of the characteristics of ‘Paprika’ yarrow is its fern-like foliage, which is slightly aromatic. This adds an additional sensory element to the plant, making it appealing not only visually but also in terms of fragrance. The foliage is also finely textured, giving it a delicate and airy appearance.

In terms of its spreading habits, ‘Paprika’ yarrow can spread both through its roots and by seeds. This means that if left unchecked, it can gradually expand its presence in the garden or landscape. However, this spreading can be controlled by regular maintenance and monitoring.

To prevent excessive spreading, it is recommended to divide the plant every few years. Dividing yarrow helps to control its growth and maintain its shape. Additionally, deadheading the flowers after they fade can also help to prevent the plant from self-seeding and spreading further.

Personally, I have grown ‘Paprika’ yarrow in my own garden, and I have found that it does have a tendency to spread. However, with regular maintenance and division, I have been able to keep it contained and prevent it from taking over other areas of my garden.

If you are concerned about the spreading nature of ‘Paprika’ yarrow, there are a few steps you can take to keep it in check. Firstly, you can create physical barriers, such as edging or a root barrier, to prevent the roots from spreading beyond a certain area. This can be particularly useful if you have limited space or want to keep the yarrow contained to a specific bed or border.

Another option is to regularly monitor the plant and remove any seedlings or new growth that appears in unwanted areas. This can be done by hand-pulling or using a garden tool to carefully remove the young plants. By staying vigilant and promptly removing any new growth, you can prevent the yarrow from spreading too far.

‘Paprika’ yarrow does have a tendency to spread, both through its roots and by seeds. However, with regular maintenance, division, and monitoring, you can control its growth and prevent it from becoming invasive. Its beautiful dusty red flowers and aromatic foliage make it a wonderful addition to any garden or landscape.
