Do you water succulents from the top or bottom?

When it comes to watering succulents, there are different methods that people use. Some prefer watering from the top, while others prefer bottom watering. Both methods can be effective, but there are a few factors to consider when deciding which method to use.

Watering from the top involves pouring water directly onto the soil around the succulent. This allows the water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots. However, it’s important to be cautious when using this method, as succulents are prone to rot if their roots stay wet for too long. To avoid overwatering, it’s crucial to ensure that the soil is well-draining and that excess water can easily escape through drainage holes in the pot.

On the other hand, bottom watering involves placing the pot of the succulent in a shallow tray or saucer filled with water. The water is then absorbed by the roots through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. This method allows the succulent to take up water as needed, without risking overwatering. Bottom watering can be particularly useful for succulents with delicate leaves or those that are more prone to rot.

Personally, I have found success with both methods, but I tend to lean towards bottom watering for most of my succulents. I find that it helps prevent overwatering and allows the plants to take up water at their own pace. However, I do occasionally top water my succulents, especially during the hot summer months when they may need a bit more hydration.

Ultimately, the choice between top watering and bottom watering comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of your succulents. It’s important to observe your plants closely and adjust your watering routine accordingly. Remember, succulents are adapted to survive in arid conditions and can tolerate periods of drought, so it’s better to underwater than to overwater them.
