Do tree lilies need staking?

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I can confidently say that tree lilies generally do not need staking if they are grown in a sheltered spot. The reason for this is because tree lilies have robust stems that can grow up to 5cm (2in) thick. This thickness provides enough support for the plant to stand tall without the need for additional staking.

One of the key characteristics of tree lilies is their impressive height. These lilies can grow much taller than other types, reaching heights of up to 2 meters (6 feet) or even more. The thick stems of tree lilies contribute to their ability to grow so tall. Unlike other lilies that may have thinner stems and require staking to prevent them from toppling over, tree lilies have sturdy stems that can support their height.

However, it’s important to note that the need for staking may still arise in certain situations. If your tree lilies are grown in an exposed or windy area, the strong gusts of wind may put pressure on the stems and cause them to bend or break. In such cases, staking can be beneficial to provide additional support and prevent any potential damage.

When considering staking, it’s essential to choose the right materials and techniques. Stakes should be strong and tall enough to support the height of the tree lilies. Bamboo stakes or metal rods are commonly used for staking plants, as they are sturdy and durable. It’s important to insert the stakes into the ground near the base of the plant and secure the stems to the stakes using soft ties or plant clips. This will provide the necessary support without causing any harm to the plant.

In my personal experience, I have grown tree lilies in both sheltered and exposed areas. In the sheltered area, where the lilies were protected from strong winds, I did not need to stake them. The thick stems provided ample support, and the lilies stood tall and strong throughout the growing season. However, in the exposed area where the winds were stronger, I found it necessary to stake the tree lilies to prevent any damage to the stems.

To summarize, while tree lilies generally do not require staking if grown in a sheltered spot, there are situations where staking may be necessary. Factors such as wind exposure and the overall strength of the stems should be taken into consideration. By providing the appropriate support, whether through natural sturdiness or staking, you can ensure that your tree lilies grow tall and thrive in your garden.
