Do tarps block out light?

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I have had my fair share of experiences with various types of tarps and covers. When it comes to blocking out light, not all tarps are created equal. While some tarps are specifically designed to block out light completely, others may only provide partial light blocking capabilities.

It is important to understand that the purpose and intended use of the tarp can greatly influence its light-blocking abilities. For example, tarps used for outdoor activities such as camping or shade structures are often designed to provide some level of shade while still allowing some light to pass through. These types of tarps are commonly referred to as shade cloths and are typically made from materials that block around 70% to 80% of light transmission.

On the other hand, there are tarps specifically manufactured for light deprivation or light deprivation (light dep) techniques in gardening. These tarps are designed to completely block out light to mimic shorter daylight periods and encourage plants to flower earlier or control their growth cycles. Light dep tarps are usually made from heavy-duty, light-blocking materials that can effectively block out 100% of light transmission.

In my personal experience, I have used both shade cloths and light dep tarps in different gardening scenarios. When I wanted to create a shaded area in my backyard, I opted for a shade cloth that allowed some light to filter through while providing protection from direct sunlight. It was perfect for creating a comfortable outdoor space without compromising on natural lighting.

However, when it came to implementing light deprivation techniques in my greenhouse, I invested in a high-quality light dep tarp. This tarp was specifically designed to block out all light, ensuring precise control over the light exposure for my plants. By using this light dep tarp, I was able to manipulate the flowering and growth cycles of my plants, resulting in earlier blooms and improved yields.

To summarize, not all tarps are capable of blocking out light completely. Shade cloths, commonly used for outdoor activities and shade structures, typically block around 70% to 80% of light transmission. On the other hand, light dep tarps are specifically designed to block out 100% of light and are commonly used in gardening to manipulate plant growth cycles. It is essential to choose the right type of tarp based on your specific needs and desired light-blocking capabilities.
