Do begonias need shade or sun?

Begonias are a popular choice for gardeners due to their stunning blooms and attractive foliage. When it comes to the amount of shade or sun they need, it really depends on the specific type of begonia you are growing.

Generally, begonias perform best in light shade or part sun. This means they thrive in an area that receives about 4-6 hours of morning sun, followed by shade or filtered light in the afternoon. This is especially true for the fibrous-rooted begonias, which include varieties like the wax begonias (Begonia semperflorens) and the angel wing begonias (Begonia coccinea).

These types of begonias prefer protection from the hot afternoon sun, as prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can cause their leaves to scorch or the plant to wilt. By providing them with some shade during the hottest part of the day, you can help prevent this damage and keep your begonias looking their best.

On the other hand, there are certain begonias that can tolerate deeper shade. This is particularly true for the tuberous begonias, such as the Non-Stop begonias (Begonia tuberhybrida). These begonias are known for their large, showy flowers and can handle growing in areas with less direct sunlight.

In fact, tuberous begonias often perform better in shadier locations, as too much sun can cause their blooms to fade or the foliage to become sunburned. These begonias thrive in filtered light or dappled shade, such as under the canopy of a tree or on a covered patio.

Aside from the flowering begonias, there are also begonias valued for their striking foliage. Rex begonias (Begonia rex) are a prime example of this. These begonias have vibrant, often variegated leaves that come in a range of colors and patterns. Rex begonias are not as reliant on sunlight for their foliage display and can tolerate growing in deeper shade.

When it comes to begonias, it’s important to consider the specific needs of the variety you are growing. While some begonias prefer more sun, others thrive in shade or filtered light. By understanding the sunlight requirements of your specific begonia type, you can provide the optimal growing conditions and help your plants flourish.

In my personal experience, I have grown both wax begonias and tuberous begonias in my garden. The wax begonias were planted in a location that received morning sun and afternoon shade, and they performed exceptionally well. The plants were vibrant and healthy, producing an abundance of flowers throughout the season.

On the other hand, the tuberous begonias were grown in a shadier area under the canopy of a large tree. Despite receiving less direct sunlight, they thrived and produced stunning blooms. The foliage remained lush and the flowers were vibrant, showcasing the beauty of these begonias.

Begonias have varying light requirements depending on the specific type. While most begonias perform best in light shade or part sun, certain varieties, such as tuberous begonias and Rex begonias, can tolerate deeper shade. By understanding the sunlight preferences of your begonias and providing the appropriate conditions, you can ensure healthy growth and beautiful blooms or foliage.
