Can you eat the pod of Little Marvel peas?

Little Marvel peas are a delightful addition to any garden, with their sweet and tender peas that are perfect for snacking or cooking. However, unlike Snow Peas or Snap Peas, the pod of Little Marvel peas is too fibrous to be edible. This means that if you want to enjoy the delicious peas inside, you will need to remove them from the shells.

When it comes to growing Little Marvel peas, they typically take on the familiar vining form. This means that they will need some support, such as a trellis or stakes, to help them grow upwards and prevent them from trailing on the ground. The vining form of Little Marvel peas also tends to be more productive than the bush types, meaning that you can expect a greater yield of peas.

In my personal experience, growing Little Marvel peas has been a joy. I love watching the vines climb and seeing the bright green pods develop. However, I do have to admit that shelling the peas can be a bit time-consuming. It requires some patience and careful handling to remove the peas without damaging them.

To shell Little Marvel peas, I usually start by gently squeezing the pod to feel for any peas inside. If the pod feels full and plump, it’s a good indication that there are peas ready to be harvested. I then use my thumb or a small knife to make a small slit along the seam of the pod. With a little pressure, the pod easily opens, revealing the peas nestled inside.

Once the pod is open, I simply slide my thumb or fingers along the inside of the pod, pushing out the peas. It’s important to handle them gently to avoid bruising or crushing the peas. As I remove each pea, I place it into a bowl or container, ready to be used in my favorite recipes.

While shelling Little Marvel peas can be a bit time-consuming, the effort is definitely worth it. The peas themselves are incredibly flavorful and have a wonderful sweetness that is hard to resist. Whether added to a stir-fry, steamed and served as a side dish, or used in a refreshing salad, Little Marvel peas are a versatile and delicious addition to any meal.

The pod of Little Marvel peas is not edible due to its fibrous nature. However, the peas inside are sweet and tender, making them a delightful addition to a variety of dishes. Growing Little Marvel peas in a vining form can be more productive than the bush types, but it does require some support for the plants to grow upwards. Shelling the peas can be a bit time-consuming, but the flavorful peas make it all worthwhile. Enjoy the process of growing and harvesting Little Marvel peas, and savor the deliciousness they bring to your table.
