It’s truly incredible to witness these graceful creatures gliding through the water, their enormous mouths wide open, as they feed on microscopic organisms.
On the other end of the size spectrum, we have the dwarf lanternshark. As its name suggests, this species is incredibly small, reaching a maximum length of just 7.9 inches (20 centimeters). These tiny sharks are found in the deep waters off the coast of Venezuela and Colombia, and they possess a unique adaptation that allows them to produce their own light. Their bodies are covered in tiny photophores, which emit a faint bioluminescent glow. It’s as if they carry their own little lanterns in the dark depths of the ocean.
