Are lipstick plants easy to grow?

Lipstick plants, also known as Aeschynanthus, can be relatively easy to grow if you provide them with the right conditions. However, it’s important to note that while they are fairly low-maintenance, they do require specific care to encourage blooms.

First and foremost, lipstick plants thrive in bright indirect light. They are native to tropical regions where they grow under the canopy of trees, receiving filtered sunlight. In order to replicate these conditions, place your lipstick plant near a window where it can receive plenty of bright, indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.

In terms of temperature, lipstick plants prefer warm conditions. They do well in average room temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 60°F (15°C), as this can cause damage to the plant. If you live in a colder climate, it may be necessary to provide supplemental heat or move the plant to a warmer location during the winter months.

Another key factor for the successful growth of lipstick plants is humidity. These plants originate from humid tropical regions, so they thrive in high humidity environments. If the air in your home is dry, especially during the winter when heaters are running, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles to increase humidity around the plant. Misting the leaves with water regularly can also help to create a more humid microclimate.

When it comes to watering, lipstick plants prefer to be kept evenly moist, but not overly wet. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and then thoroughly water the plant, ensuring that excess water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Avoid letting the plant sit in water, as this can lead to root rot. It’s always a good idea to check the moisture level of the soil before watering, as overwatering can be detrimental to the health of the plant.

Fertilizing your lipstick plant is also important for encouraging blooms. During the growing season, which is typically spring and summer, you can feed your plant with a balanced houseplant fertilizer once a month. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging to avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to nutrient burn.

Pruning is not necessary for lipstick plants, but it can help to encourage bushier growth and more blooms. If your plant becomes leggy or overgrown, you can trim back the stems to promote new growth. Additionally, removing any dead or yellowing leaves can help to keep the plant looking healthy and vibrant.

While lipstick plants can be relatively easy to grow, they do require specific care to encourage blooming. Providing them with bright indirect light, warm temperatures, and high humidity will create the ideal conditions for their growth. Remember to water them evenly and fertilize during the growing season, and don’t be afraid to give them a little trim to promote bushier growth. With the right care, you can enjoy the beautiful blooms of your lipstick plant for years to come.
