Why is my burgundy rubber plant green?

Improper lighting is the most common reason why the burgundy leaves of your rubber plant are turning green. This is because the plant requires bright indirect light to maintain its burgundy color. Without sufficient light, the leaves can fade and lose their vibrant hue.

I’ve encountered a similar situation with my own burgundy rubber plant. When I first brought it home, I placed it in a spot with limited light, thinking it would be fine. However, over time, I noticed that the once deep burgundy leaves were gradually turning green. This prompted me to do some research and understand the importance of proper lighting for this particular plant.

Rubber plants, including the burgundy variety, are native to tropical regions where they thrive in bright but indirect sunlight. They have adapted to receive filtered light through the dense canopy of trees in their natural habitat. Therefore, providing similar lighting conditions is crucial for maintaining their desired leaf color.

If your rubber plant is not receiving enough light, it will start to revert to its natural green color. This is a survival mechanism, as the plant tries to maximize its photosynthesis process by producing more chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color in leaves. While the plant can tolerate lower light conditions, it may not be able to sustain its burgundy coloration.

To address this issue, I recommend finding a sunny window or a well-lit area in your home where your rubber plant can receive bright indirect light. Placing it near a north-facing window or using sheer curtains to filter the sunlight can provide the right amount of light without exposing the plant to direct sun, which can scorch its leaves.

If natural light is limited in your space, you may consider supplementing with artificial lighting. LED grow lights or fluorescent lights with a spectrum similar to natural sunlight can be used to provide the necessary light intensity for your rubber plant. Position the lights a few feet above the plant and keep them on for about 12-14 hours a day to mimic a natural day-night cycle.

It’s important to note that while lighting is a significant factor, other environmental conditions can also affect the leaf color of your rubber plant. Ensure that you are providing adequate watering, maintaining proper humidity levels, and avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations. These factors, along with proper lighting, will contribute to the overall health and color of your burgundy rubber plant.

If your burgundy rubber plant is turning green, it is likely due to a lack of bright indirect light. By providing the plant with the proper lighting conditions, such as a sunny window or artificial lighting, you can help it regain and maintain its vibrant burgundy color. Remember to also consider other environmental factors to ensure the overall well-being of your plant.
