Which is the best cherry tomato?

When it comes to cherry tomatoes, there are several varieties that I would recommend as the best options. These varieties are known for their flavor, productivity, and ability to ripen early in our short growing season.

One of my top choices is the ‘Sungold’ cherry tomato. This variety is incredibly popular among gardeners for its sweet and tropical flavor. The fruits are small and golden-orange in color, and they are ready to harvest in about 55-60 days. ‘Sungold’ tomatoes are also known for their high productivity, so you can expect to get a bountiful harvest from this variety.

Another excellent choice is the ‘Oregon Cherry’ tomato. This variety is perfect for small spaces, making it ideal for container gardening or smaller gardens. The plants are compact and bushy, reaching about 3-4 feet in height. ‘Oregon Cherry’ tomatoes are bright red and have a deliciously sweet flavor. They typically ripen in about 60-65 days.

If you’re looking for larger cherry tomatoes, ‘Early Girl’ is a fantastic option. This variety produces medium-sized fruits that are ready to harvest in approximately 50-55 days. ‘Early Girl’ tomatoes have a classic tomato flavor and are great for slicing onto salads or sandwiches. The plants are indeterminate, meaning they will continue to produce tomatoes throughout the season.

For those who prefer a compact and space-friendly variety, ‘Bush Goliath’ is a perfect choice. These plants grow to about 3-4 feet in height and have a bushy habit. ‘Bush Goliath’ cherry tomatoes are juicy, meaty, and have a rich flavor. They are ready to harvest in about 65-70 days and are known for their high yields.

If you’re interested in heirloom varieties, ‘Bloody Butcher’ is worth considering. These cherry tomatoes are small and deep red in color. They have a sweet yet tangy flavor that is truly unique. ‘Bloody Butcher’ tomatoes typically ripen in about 70-75 days.

The best cherry tomato varieties for our short growing season are ‘Sungold’, ‘Oregon Cherry’, ‘Early Girl’, ‘Bush Goliath’, and ‘Bloody Butcher’. Each of these varieties offers delicious flavor, productivity, and the ability to ripen early. Whether you have limited space or prefer larger fruits, there is a cherry tomato variety to suit your needs. Happy gardening!
