Which aphids have wings?

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I have come across the issue of aphids many times. Aphids are small insects that can cause damage to plants by feeding on their sap. The pea aphid, in particular, is a common pest that affects pea plants and other legumes.

One interesting aspect of the pea aphid is its ability to produce both winged and wingless morphs. This means that some aphids have wings, while others do not. The presence or absence of wings in pea aphids is influenced by their environment and the availability of food.

When pea aphid mothers are raised in conditions with abundant food, their asexually produced daughters develop without wings. This is because when there is plenty of food available, the aphids can stay in one place and feed comfortably without the need to disperse. In such situations, having wings becomes unnecessary.

However, in crowded and food-scarce conditions, the pea aphid mothers give birth to daughters with wings. This is because when resources are limited, the aphids need to find new living conditions where they can find more food. The wings enable them to fly and search for better environments, potentially with more abundant food sources.

I have personally observed this phenomenon in my own garden. During a particularly dry and overcrowded season, I noticed an increase in the number of winged aphids on my pea plants. These aphids were actively flying around and seemed to be searching for better conditions. This observation aligns with the natural behavior of the pea aphid to produce winged offspring when faced with unfavorable conditions.

To summarize, the presence of wings in pea aphids is influenced by their environment and the availability of food. When resources are abundant, aphids do not develop wings as they do not need to disperse. However, in crowded and food-scarce conditions, winged aphids are produced to help them find better living conditions. This adaptation allows the pea aphids to survive and thrive in different environments.
