Where is the best place to plant Pulmonaria?

When it comes to finding the best location for planting Pulmonaria, it’s important to consider their preferences for light and soil conditions. Pulmonarias thrive in partial shade, so it’s ideal to find a spot in your garden that receives filtered sunlight or dappled shade throughout the day. This could be under the canopy of trees, along a north-facing wall, or in an area that is shaded for part of the day.

In terms of soil, Pulmonaria plants prefer moist and well-drained conditions. It’s beneficial to have soil that is rich in organic matter, as this helps retain moisture while still allowing excess water to drain away. If your soil has low levels of organic matter, you can improve it by incorporating compost, peat moss, or well-rotted manure before planting. This will help create a more fertile and moisture-retentive environment for the Pulmonarias.

I remember when I planted my first Pulmonaria, I chose a spot in my garden that was partially shaded by a large oak tree. The soil in that area was quite sandy and lacked organic matter, so I added a generous amount of compost and mixed it into the soil before planting. This helped improve the soil structure and moisture-holding capacity.

One thing to keep in mind is that Pulmonarias do not perform well in overly dry or wet sites. If the soil is too dry, the plants may struggle to establish and may wilt easily. On the other hand, if the soil is consistently waterlogged, it can lead to root rot and other issues. So, it’s important to find a balance in terms of soil moisture.

To maintain the moisture levels, you can apply a layer of mulch around the plants. This will help conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and also contribute to the organic matter content of the soil as it breaks down over time. I usually use a layer of shredded bark or compost as mulch around my Pulmonarias.

When choosing a location for planting Pulmonaria, opt for a partially shaded area that receives filtered sunlight throughout the day. Ensure the soil is moist, well-drained, and rich in organic matter. If needed, amend the soil with compost or other organic materials before planting. Avoid excessively dry or wet sites, and maintain adequate moisture levels by applying a layer of mulch. These considerations will help create an optimal growing environment for your Pulmonaria plants.
