What will scare a possum away?

Garlic has been known to be an effective deterrent for repelling opossums. The strong scent and taste of garlic can be quite unpleasant for these creatures, causing them to stay away from areas where it is present. There are a few different ways you can use garlic to scare away possums.

One method is to place crushed garlic cloves around your yard. You can scatter them in areas where you suspect the opossums may be active, such as near trash cans, gardens, or other areas where they may be foraging for food. The strong odor of the garlic can help to deter them from coming into those areas.

Another option is to create a garlic spray by mixing minced garlic with water. Simply add the minced garlic to a spray bottle and fill it with water. Shake the bottle well to ensure the garlic is evenly distributed throughout the water. Then, you can spray this mixture on surfaces or areas where opossums are active, such as along fences, near entry points to your property, or on plants they may be targeting.

It’s important to note that while garlic can be effective in repelling opossums, it may not be a foolproof solution. Some opossums may be more tolerant of the smell or may become accustomed to it over time. Additionally, garlic may need to be reapplied periodically, especially after rain or heavy watering, as the scent can dissipate.

In my personal experience, I have found garlic to be somewhat effective in deterring opossums. I had a problem with opossums rummaging through my trash cans and causing a mess in my yard. I started by placing crushed garlic cloves around the perimeter of my yard, particularly near the trash cans. This seemed to help reduce the frequency of opossum visits. However, I found that using a garlic spray was more effective in keeping them away for longer periods of time.

In addition to using garlic, there are other methods you can try to scare away opossums. These include installing motion-activated lights or sprinklers, placing ammonia-soaked rags or cotton balls around your property, or using noise deterrents such as wind chimes or radios. It may be worth trying a combination of these methods to increase your chances of success.

While garlic can be a useful tool in repelling opossums, it is important to remember that every situation is unique. What works for one person may not work for another, and it may take some trial and error to find the most effective solution for your specific opossum problem.
