What time of day are moles most active?

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I have encountered many homeowners frustrated with mole problems in their yards. One common question I often hear is, “What time of day are moles most active?” Well, based on my experience and knowledge, moles tend to be most active during the early morning and late evening hours. This is especially true during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is cooler.

Moles are primarily nocturnal creatures, meaning they are more active during the night than during the day. However, they are not completely inactive during daylight hours. On cloudy days, when the sunlight is diffused and less intense, moles may be more willing to venture out and search for food or mate. They are less likely to be active on sunny days when the bright light can be uncomfortable for them.

It’s important to note that moles are sensitive to vibrations and disturbances in their environment. This is why some methods, such as using vibration or ultrasonic devices, are advertised as deterrents. While these devices may have some effect in certain situations, they are not always reliable or effective in getting rid of moles completely. Moles are persistent creatures, and they can often adapt to these deterrents over time.

Another commonly suggested method for removing moles is placing chewing gum in their tunnels. The idea behind this is that moles will consume the gum and it will clog their digestive system, ultimately leading to their demise. However, there is little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of this method. In fact, it can be harmful to wildlife and the environment if gum or other non-biodegradable substances are left in the soil.

Instead of relying on these questionable methods, there are more practical and humane approaches to dealing with moles. Here are a few strategies that have proven to be effective in my experience:

1. Trapping: Setting up mole traps can be an efficient way to catch and remove moles from your yard. There are different types of traps available, such as snap traps and scissor traps, which can be placed in active mole tunnels. It’s important to follow the instructions provided with the traps and check them regularly to ensure their effectiveness.

2. Mole repellents: There are mole repellents available in the market that use natural ingredients like castor oil or predator urine to deter moles. These repellents create an unpleasant environment for moles and can help drive them away from your yard. However, it’s important to note that repellents may need to be reapplied periodically, especially after heavy rainfall.

3. Lawn maintenance: Keeping your lawn well-maintained can discourage moles from invading your yard. Regularly mowing the grass and removing excess thatch reduces the availability of food sources, such as earthworms and grubs, which are attractive to moles. Additionally, removing debris and clutter from your yard eliminates potential hiding spots for moles.

4. Physical barriers: Installing physical barriers like underground fencing or mesh can help prevent moles from burrowing into specific areas of your yard. This method is particularly useful for protecting garden beds or areas with delicate plants that may be vulnerable to mole damage.

Moles are most active during the early morning and late evening hours, especially on cloudy days. While there are various methods advertised for removing moles, such as chewing gum and vibration or ultrasonic devices, these methods are often ineffective or unreliable. Instead, trapping, using mole repellents, maintaining your lawn, and installing physical barriers are more practical and humane approaches to dealing with mole problems. Remember, it’s important to be patient and persistent when trying to control moles, as they can be tenacious creatures.
