What plants need row covers?

Spring season extension can be a great way to maximize your garden’s productivity and extend the growing season for various plants. One effective method to achieve this is by using row covers. These covers are made of lightweight fabric or plastic and are placed directly over the plants, providing protection from frost, wind, and pests.

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are warm-season crops that benefit greatly from row covers. These plants are sensitive to cold temperatures and can be easily damaged or killed by frost. By using row covers, you can create a microclimate around these plants, keeping them warm and protected until the weather becomes more favorable.

Similarly, summer and winter squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, and melons can also benefit from row covers. These vegetables are prone to damage from both cold temperatures and pests. Row covers not only provide a physical barrier against insects but also help to trap heat, creating a more favorable environment for these heat-loving plants.

Beans, both bush and pole varieties, can also benefit from row covers. They are typically planted after the danger of frost has passed, but using row covers can provide added protection during their early growth stages. Row covers can help to warm the soil and protect against unexpected cold snaps, ensuring a successful bean harvest.

Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and kale can benefit from row covers as well. These cool-season crops can tolerate cooler temperatures, but row covers can provide added protection against frost and wind damage. Using row covers can also help to extend the harvest period of these crops by providing a slightly warmer environment.

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts can also benefit from row covers. These crops are typically planted in early spring or late summer, and row covers can help to protect them from chilly temperatures and pests like cabbage worms.

Root crops such as beets and radishes can benefit from the use of row covers, especially during the early stages of growth. Row covers can help to warm the soil and promote germination, resulting in healthier and more robust plants.

Even potatoes, which are typically grown in the ground, can be protected with row covers. These covers can help to protect the young potato plants from frost and pests while allowing them to grow and develop.

Lastly, strawberries, which are often grown in raised beds or containers, can also benefit from row covers. These covers can help to protect the delicate flowers and fruits from frost damage and also deter pests like birds from feasting on the berries.

In my own experience, I have found row covers to be incredibly useful in extending the growing season for various plants. I have successfully used them for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and leafy greens, among others. By using row covers, I have been able to start planting earlier in the spring and continue harvesting well into the fall. The added protection against pests and frost has resulted in healthier plants and higher yields.

Row covers can be beneficial for a wide range of plants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, summer and winter squash, cucumber, pumpkin, melons, beans, greens, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, collards, chard, beets, potatoes, and strawberries. These covers provide protection against frost, wind, and pests, creating a favorable microclimate for plant growth and extending the growing season.
