What plants are good for espalier?

When it comes to choosing plants for espalier, there are several California native options that can work beautifully. One such plant is the garrya, also known as silk tassel. It has long, flexible branches that can be trained into a desired shape. Another option is the fremontodendron, or flannel bush, which has sturdy branches that can be easily manipulated.

If you prefer a plant with evergreen foliage, the Carolina cherry (Prunus caroliniana) is a great choice. It has glossy green leaves that can be trained into a neat espalier form. Another option is the flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum), which produces vibrant pink or red flowers in the spring. Its branches can be trained horizontally to create an attractive espalier pattern.

For a more unique and textured look, consider using the vine maple (Acer circinatum). Its branches have a distinct reddish color and can be easily trained into beautiful shapes. Additionally, ceanothus, commonly known as California lilac, can be espaliered while its branches are young and pliable. It produces stunning blue flowers and can be a stunning addition to any espalier design.

It’s important to note that espalier requires regular pruning and maintenance to keep the plants in shape. Don’t be overwhelmed if the espalier gets a bit out of hand during the growing season. Simply nip back the branches to a leaf node to keep them in check and maintain the desired form.

In my personal experience, I have successfully espaliered both garrya and Carolina cherry in my garden. It was a rewarding process to shape the plants and see them thrive in their trained forms. However, it’s important to consider the specific growing conditions and needs of each plant before deciding on which ones to use for espalier in your own garden.
