What is the Aztec chinampas?

The Aztec chinampas, also known as floating gardens, were ingenious agricultural structures that were created by the ancient Aztecs in the southwestern region of the Valley of Mexico, specifically in Xochimilco. These chinampas were essentially small, artificial islands built on freshwater lakes, primarily for the purpose of cultivating crops.

The technique of constructing chinampas involved a combination of natural and man-made materials. First, a base was created by driving stakes into the lakebed, forming a rectangular or trapezoidal shape. Then, woven mats made from reeds or other plants were placed on top of the stakes to create a solid foundation. Layers of mud, soil, and decaying vegetation were added on top of the mats to build up the height of the chinampa.
