What is an Angelcot?

An Angelcot is a delicious and unique fruit that is a hybrid between an apricot and a plum. It was developed by Zaiger Genetics, a family-owned fruit breeding company in Modesto, California. I had the pleasure of tasting an Angelcot for the first time last year, and I must say, it was a truly delightful experience.

The Angelcot has the best characteristics of both apricots and plums. Its golden-orange skin is smooth and slightly fuzzy, just like an apricot. The flesh is juicy and sweet, with a hint of tartness, reminiscent of a plum. The flavor is incredibly rich and complex, with notes of honey and citrus. It truly is a taste sensation like no other.

One of the things that impressed me most about the Angelcot is its texture. The flesh is firm yet tender, and it has a satisfying crunch when you bite into it. It’s not too soft or too hard, just the perfect balance.

In terms of appearance, the Angelcot is quite stunning. Its vibrant orange color is a feast for the eyes, and it looks absolutely gorgeous when displayed in a fruit bowl or used in a dessert.

The versatility of the Angelcot is another reason why it is so special. It can be enjoyed fresh, just as it is, or used in a variety of culinary creations. Its sweet and tangy flavor pairs well with both sweet and savory dishes. I personally used Angelcots in a summer salad with arugula, goat cheese, and a balsamic glaze, and it was a huge hit!

One thing to note about Angelcots is that they have a relatively short season. They are typically available from late spring to early summer, so it’s important to enjoy them while you can. However, if you can get your hands on them, I highly recommend stocking up and preserving them for later use. They are perfect for making jams, jellies, and even fruit leather.

An Angelcot is a truly exceptional fruit that combines the best qualities of apricots and plums. Its delicious flavor, unique texture, and stunning appearance make it a standout in the world of fruits. If you have the opportunity to try an Angelcot, I encourage you to do so. You won’t be disappointed!
