What can I use to line a hanging basket?

When it comes to lining a hanging basket, there are several options available to choose from. One popular choice is to use a liner made of coconut fiber, also known as coir. Coir liners are natural, biodegradable, and provide excellent drainage for the plants. They also help to retain moisture, which is especially beneficial for plants in hanging baskets as they tend to dry out quickly.

To line a hanging basket with a coir liner, start by selecting a liner that is the appropriate size for your basket. Place the liner inside the basket and press it firmly against the sides, making sure it fits snugly. If the liner is too large, you can trim off any excess material.

Next, half fill the basket with a good quality potting compost. I recommend using a potting compost specifically designed for containers, such as Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Enriched Compost Pots & Baskets. This type of compost contains added water-retaining crystals, which help to keep the plants hydrated.

Now it’s time to plant your trailing plants. Select plants that are suitable for hanging baskets, such as trailing petunias, ivy, or lobelia. Make small holes in the side of the liner and gently insert the plants, ensuring that the roots are covered with compost. Space the plants evenly around the basket, leaving room for them to grow and cascade over the sides.

Once the plants are in place, top up the basket with more compost, making sure to cover the roots completely. Press the compost down gently to secure the plants in position. It’s important not to overfill the basket, as this can lead to waterlogging and poor drainage.

After planting, water the basket thoroughly to settle the compost and ensure that the plants are well hydrated. Hang the basket in a location that receives the appropriate amount of sunlight for the plants you have chosen. Remember to water the basket regularly, as hanging baskets tend to dry out more quickly than plants in the ground.

In addition to coir liners, there are other options available for lining hanging baskets. Plastic liners are a durable and lightweight choice, and they can be reused year after year. Moss liners, made from natural moss, provide a rustic and decorative look to the basket. They also help to retain moisture and provide insulation for the plants.

When choosing a liner for your hanging basket, consider factors such as drainage, moisture retention, and durability. Coconut fiber liners, plastic liners, and moss liners are all viable options, each with its own advantages. Whichever liner you choose, make sure to use a good quality potting compost and select trailing plants that are suitable for hanging baskets. With proper care and maintenance, your hanging basket will thrive and bring beauty to your outdoor space.
