What can I plant with Wintergreen Boxwood?

When it comes to planting companions for Wintergreen Boxwood, there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, you want to choose plants that will complement the vibrant green color of the boxwood and provide a visually pleasing contrast. Second, it’s important to select plants that have similar light and moisture requirements to ensure they thrive together.

One great option for planting with Wintergreen Boxwood is periwinkle (Vinca minor). Periwinkles are low-growing evergreen plants with beautiful blue or purple flowers. They can create a stunning contrast against the dark green foliage of the boxwood. Periwinkles are also quite versatile and can tolerate partial shade, making them a great choice if your boxwoods are situated in an area with less sunlight.

To create a border around your boxwoods, lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina) or creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) are excellent choices. Lamb’s ear is a low-spreading perennial with soft, silver-gray leaves that add a touch of elegance to any landscape. Its fuzzy texture provides an interesting contrast to the smooth foliage of the boxwood. Creeping thyme, on the other hand, is a low-growing herb that forms a dense mat of fragrant foliage. It comes in various colors, such as green, gold, or variegated, and can create a beautiful border around your boxwoods.

Another option to consider is sedum (Sedum spp.), particularly low-growing varieties like Sedum spurium or Sedum kamtschaticum. These succulent plants have fleshy leaves and come in a range of colors, including green, red, and gold. They are incredibly drought-tolerant and can thrive in full sun or partial shade. Planting sedum alongside your Wintergreen Boxwood can add a pop of color and texture to your landscape.

In terms of care, it’s important to make sure that the companion plants are not competing with the boxwoods for nutrients and water. Consider adding a layer of mulch around the base of all the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Regular watering and occasional fertilizing will also help ensure the health and vitality of both the boxwoods and their companions.

In my personal experience, I have found that a combination of periwinkle, lamb’s ear, and sedum works wonderfully with Wintergreen Boxwood. The periwinkle provides a stunning burst of color, while the lamb’s ear adds a touch of elegance and softness. The sedum, with its vibrant foliage, creates a beautiful contrast and adds interest to the overall landscape. Together, they create a visually appealing and harmonious planting combination.

When planting companions for Wintergreen Boxwood, it’s important to select plants that complement its vibrant green color, have similar light and moisture requirements, and provide interesting contrasts in texture and form. Periwinkle, lamb’s ear, creeping thyme, and sedum are all excellent choices that can enhance the beauty of your boxwood while adding structure and visual interest to your landscape.
