Should you water rhubarb everyday?

When it comes to watering rhubarb, it is important to strike a balance. While good drainage is crucial for the plant’s health, it also requires a significant amount of water. So, should you water rhubarb every day? The short answer is no. Watering rhubarb every day may actually do more harm than good. Let me explain why.

Firstly, rhubarb plants thrive in moist soil. However, constantly wet soil can lead to root rot and other diseases. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the soil has good drainage. This can be achieved by adding organic matter, such as compost, to the soil before planting. Additionally, planting rhubarb in raised beds or mounds can help improve drainage.

Once the rhubarb is established, it is crucial to keep the soil consistently moist. However, this doesn’t mean watering it every day. Instead, aim to provide about an inch of water per week, either through rainfall or irrigation. If there has been a lack of rain, you may need to water the plants to meet this requirement. It is important to water deeply, allowing the water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots.

To determine if your rhubarb plants need watering, you can use the finger test. Stick your finger about an inch into the soil near the plant. If it feels dry at that depth, it’s time to water. However, if the soil is still moist, hold off on watering for a little longer.

During the growing season, which typically begins in early spring and lasts until early summer, rhubarb plants are actively growing and producing foliage. This is when they require the most water. However, as the weather cools down and the plants enter dormancy, their water needs decrease. It is important to adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Personal experience has taught me the importance of maintaining adequate moisture levels for rhubarb. In one instance, I neglected to water my rhubarb plants regularly during a dry spell. As a result, the leaves wilted and the plants suffered. Thankfully, I quickly realized my mistake and began watering them more frequently. With time and care, the plants bounced back and continued to thrive.

While rhubarb plants require a lot of water, watering them every day is not necessary and can even be detrimental. Aim to provide about an inch of water per week, keeping the soil consistently moist but not overly saturated. Adjust your watering schedule based on the plant’s growth stage and weather conditions. By striking the right balance, you can ensure healthy and productive rhubarb plants in your garden.
