Is there a small version of Russian sage?

There is a small version of Russian Sage called ‘Lacey Blue’. This variety is a great option for those who have limited space in their garden or landscaping area. Unlike the taller ‘Blue Spires’ Russian Sage, ‘Lacey Blue’ grows to be only 18-24″ tall and 24-36″ wide. This compact size makes it perfect for small gardens, borders, or containers.

I have personally grown ‘Lacey Blue’ in my own garden, and I must say it is a wonderful addition. Its smaller size allows it to fit into tight spaces where larger plants may not be suitable. I planted it along the edge of a walkway, and it added a beautiful splash of color without overwhelming the area.

One of the advantages of ‘Lacey Blue’ is that it retains the same attractive characteristics of the taller Russian Sage varieties. It still has the aromatic gray-green foliage and the lovely lavender-blue flowers that are characteristic of Russian Sage. The flowers bloom from mid-summer to early fall, providing a long-lasting display of color. Additionally, Russian Sage is known for its drought tolerance, making it a low-maintenance plant once established.

In terms of care, ‘Lacey Blue’ Russian Sage is relatively easy to grow. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is also deer and rabbit resistant, which is a plus for many gardeners. Pruning can be done in early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged growth. This will help maintain its compact form and promote healthy growth.

‘Lacey Blue’ Russian Sage is a fantastic option for those looking for a smaller version of this popular plant. Its compact size allows it to fit into small spaces without sacrificing the beauty and charm of Russian Sage. Whether you have a small garden, a border that needs filling, or a container that needs some height, ‘Lacey Blue’ is a great choice.
