Is Redhaven a Freestone?

Red Haven peaches, also known as Redhaven, are a popular variety of peaches grown in the Okanagan region. One of the distinguishing characteristics of Red Haven peaches is that they are considered a “Semi-freestone” variety. This means that once the peaches are fully ripe, the flesh comes away cleanly from the pit, making them easier to eat and process for canning or baking. However, it is important to note that before they are fully ripe, Red Haven peaches can be difficult to remove from the pit.

In my experience, I have found that Red Haven peaches are best enjoyed when they have fully ripened. At this stage, the flesh readily separates from the pit, allowing for easy consumption. To determine if a Red Haven peach is ripe, I gently press the fruit near the stem end. If it gives slightly and feels soft, it is likely ready to be enjoyed. However, if the fruit feels firm and does not yield to gentle pressure, it is best to wait a little longer for it to ripen fully.
