Is pittosporum a sun or shade plant?

Pittosporums are versatile plants that can thrive in various lighting conditions. However, they do have a preference for full sun exposure. This means that providing them with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day will result in a lush and dense screen of pittosporums.

In situations where full sun is not possible, pittosporums can also tolerate part shade. This means they can still grow and survive with less than six hours of direct sunlight. However, it is important to note that in part shade conditions, the density of the screen may be compromised.

To achieve an optimal screen of pittosporums, it is recommended to plant them three feet apart. This spacing allows each plant to have sufficient room for growth and ensures that the screen will fill in nicely over time.

In my personal experience, I have found that pittosporums thrive when they receive ample sunlight. I had a row of pittosporums planted along the southern side of my garden where they received full sun exposure for most of the day. The result was a beautiful and dense screen that provided privacy and added aesthetic appeal to my outdoor space.

On the other hand, I also had a few pittosporums planted in a partially shaded area of my garden. While they did survive and grow, the density of the screen was noticeably lower compared to the ones in full sun. The plants were taller and had more space between them, resulting in a less effective privacy screen.

To summarize, pittosporums are primarily sun-loving plants, but they can also tolerate part shade conditions. If you want to achieve a dense and full screen, it is best to provide them with at least six hours of direct sunlight. However, if full sun is not possible, they can still grow and survive in part shade, although the density of the screen may be compromised.
