Is Arboricola the same as Schefflera?

Arboricola and Schefflera are often used interchangeably to refer to the same plant, but there are some differences to consider. Arboricola is a common name for the plant species Schefflera arboricola, which is also known as umbrella plant or dwarf schefflera. So, technically speaking, arboricola is a specific variety or cultivar of the larger Schefflera genus.

The name “arboricola” is derived from the Latin word “arbor,” meaning tree, which reflects the plant’s ability to grow into a small tree if given the right conditions. On the other hand, the term “schefflera” is the genus name that encompasses various species of plants, including Schefflera actinophylla and Schefflera elegantissima, among others.

In terms of appearance, Schefflera arboricola typically has smaller leaves and a more compact growth habit compared to other Schefflera species. The leaves of arboricola are usually dark green in color and have a glossy texture. The plant can reach a height of 10-25 feet in its natural habitat, but when grown as a houseplant, it can be kept much smaller through regular pruning.

Arboricola is a popular choice for indoor gardening due to its adaptability to a wide range of light conditions. It can tolerate both bright, indirect light and lower light levels, making it suitable for different areas of the house. It is also relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate occasional neglect.

In terms of care, Schefflera arboricola prefers well-draining soil and should be watered thoroughly but allowed to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. It benefits from regular fertilization during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Pruning can be done to maintain the desired size and shape of the plant.

I personally have experience with Schefflera arboricola as a houseplant and have found it to be quite resilient. It has thrived in various lighting conditions, from bright windowsills to darker corners of the room. However, it is important to note that different cultivars or varieties of arboricola may have slightly different care requirements, so it’s always a good idea to research the specific needs of the plant you have.

While arboricola is often used as another name for Schefflera arboricola, it is important to understand that arboricola is a specific variety within the broader Schefflera genus. The plant is known for its compact size, glossy leaves, and adaptability to different light conditions. With proper care, it can be a beautiful addition to indoor spaces.
