How to tell difference between Christmas cactus and Thanksgiving cactus?

When it comes to distinguishing between the Christmas cactus and the Thanksgiving cactus, the key lies in the shape of their leaves. As an avid gardener and landscaping enthusiast, I have spent countless hours observing and studying these two plants.

1. Leaf Shape:
The Thanksgiving cactus, scientifically known as Schlumgera truncata, features leaves with very pointed and claw-shaped projections on the edges. These projections give the plant a more angular and jagged appearance. On the other hand, the Christmas cactus, scientifically known as Schlumgera bridgesti, has leaves with projections that are more scalloped or tear drop-shaped. These projections are softer and less prominent compared to those of the Thanksgiving cactus.

2. Flowering Time:
Another way to differentiate between the Christmas cactus and the Thanksgiving cactus is by their flowering time, which coincides with their respective holidays. The Thanksgiving cactus typically blooms in late fall, around the Thanksgiving holiday, hence its name. On the other hand, the Christmas cactus blooms closer to the Christmas season, usually in December. Observing the flowering time can provide a helpful clue in identifying these cacti.

3. Growing Habit:
Although it may not be as obvious from a distance, the growth habit of these cacti can also offer some clues. The Thanksgiving cactus tends to have a more spreading and trailing growth habit, with its stems cascading down the sides of the pot or hanging basket. In contrast, the Christmas cactus often grows more upright, with its stems standing more erect and reaching towards the sky.

4. Care Requirements:
While not a foolproof method of identification, the care requirements for these cacti can also provide some hints. The Thanksgiving cactus prefers slightly drier conditions and can tolerate more direct sunlight than the Christmas cactus. On the other hand, the Christmas cactus thrives in more humid environments and prefers indirect sunlight or bright, filtered light.

In my personal experience, I have found that the leaf shape is the most reliable characteristic for differentiating between the Christmas cactus and the Thanksgiving cactus. By closely examining the leaves and comparing them to the descriptions provided, you can confidently identify which type of cactus you have in your collection.

It’s worth noting that there is another closely related cactus called the Easter cactus (Hatiora gaertneri), which also has similar characteristics to the Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti. The Easter cactus has rounded leaf projections and typically blooms around the Easter holiday, providing an additional option for cactus enthusiasts.

By paying attention to the shape of the leaves, the flowering time, the growth habit, and the care requirements, you can successfully tell the difference between the Christmas cactus and the Thanksgiving cactus. These beautiful plants each have their own unique features that make them a wonderful addition to any indoor or outdoor garden.
