How many different hoyas are there?

There are many different varieties of hoyas, each with its own unique characteristics and beauty. As a gardening and landscaping expert, I have encountered a wide range of hoyas in my experience. While it is difficult to give an exact number of how many different hoyas there are, I can certainly share some of the most popular and well-known varieties.

1. Hoya carnosa: This is one of the most common and widely grown hoyas. It has thick, waxy leaves and produces clusters of star-shaped flowers that are often fragrant. The flowers can range in color from white to pink, and they are known for their sweet scent.

2. Hoya kerrii: Also known as the “Sweetheart Hoya,” this variety has heart-shaped leaves that make it a favorite among plant collectors. It is a slow-growing plant and is often sold as a single leaf cutting, which can be rooted to grow a new plant.

3. Hoya pubicalyx: This hoya variety is known for its long, trailing vines and vibrant flowers. The leaves are dark green and have a velvety texture, while the flowers can be purple, pink, or red. It is a relatively easy-to-grow hoya and is often used in hanging baskets or as a trailing plant.

4. Hoya australis: Native to Australia, this hoya variety has long, narrow leaves and produces clusters of white flowers with a sweet fragrance. It is a vigorous grower and can be trained to climb or trail. Hoya australis is a popular choice for outdoor gardens in warmer climates.

5. Hoya compacta: As mentioned earlier, the Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ is a unique hoya variety with rope-like vines. The foliage twists and turns, creating an interesting and eye-catching display. It is also known as the “Hindu Rope Hoya” due to its appearance. This hoya is a great choice for hanging baskets, as the vines can cascade down beautifully.

These are just a few examples of the many different hoyas that are available to gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Each variety has its own distinct features and requirements, making them a joy to grow and care for. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, there is sure to be a hoya variety that will capture your heart and bring beauty to your indoor or outdoor space.
