How do you plant cane berries?

To plant cane berries, it is best to start with dormant, bare root canes. This is typically done in late winter to mid-spring, before the growing season begins. The first step is to choose a suitable location for your cane berries. They prefer full sun and well-draining soil.

Prepare the soil by removing any weeds or grass and loosening it with a garden fork or tiller. It’s also a good idea to amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, to improve its fertility and drainage. This will provide a good foundation for the canes to grow.

Next, dig a hole for each cane that is no more than 2 inches deep. Space the canes 30-36 inches apart, with rows spaced 8-10 feet apart. This will allow enough room for the canes to spread out and grow.

When planting the canes, be sure to spread out the roots in the hole and backfill with soil, firming it gently around the plant. It’s important to plant at the correct depth, so make sure that the bud union (the swollen area where the cane was grafted onto the rootstock) is level with the soil surface. If the bud union is buried too deep, it can cause the plant to rot.

After planting, it’s recommended to cut the cane back to 3-4 buds above ground level. This will encourage new growth and help the plant establish itself. It may seem drastic, but it will promote vigorous growth and a healthier plant in the long run.

Once the canes start to grow, it’s important to provide support for them. This can be done by installing a trellis or a wire system for the canes to climb on. This will help keep the canes upright and prevent them from sprawling on the ground.

As the canes grow, it’s important to maintain them by removing any excess growth. Each year, allow 10-12 primocanes (new canes) to grow from each plant, removing any additional ones by hoeing or tilling. This will help control the size of the plant and ensure that each cane receives enough light and nutrients for optimal fruit production.

Throughout the growing season, it’s important to provide regular water to the plants, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plants can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Cane berries are typically ready for harvest in late summer to early fall, depending on the variety. It’s important to pick the berries when they are fully ripe for the best flavor and sweetness.

By following these planting and care instructions, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious cane berries year after year.
