How do you know if monstera is over or underwatered?

One way to determine if your monstera plant is being overwatered is by observing the older leaves. If you notice that the leaves toward the bottom of the plant are turning yellow, this could be a sign of overwatering. The excess water may be causing the roots to become waterlogged, leading to nutrient deficiencies and yellowing of the leaves.

On the other hand, if your monstera plant is underwatered, you may notice yellowing leaves all over the plant. This is because the lack of water prevents the plant from properly absorbing nutrients, causing the leaves to turn yellow. In this case, the newer and more vulnerable leaves may be the first to show signs of yellowing.

It’s important to note that the symptoms of overwatering and underwatering can be similar, as both conditions can result in yellowing leaves. However, by observing the location of the yellowing leaves, you can often determine whether your monstera is receiving too much or too little water.

To further confirm if your monstera is over or underwatered, you can also check the moisture level of the soil. Overwatered soil will feel consistently wet or waterlogged, and you may even notice a foul odor. Underwatered soil, on the other hand, will feel dry to the touch and may pull away from the edges of the pot.

In my personal experience, I once overwatered my monstera plant and noticed that the older leaves started turning yellow. I realized that I had been watering it too frequently, not giving the soil enough time to dry out between waterings. To remedy the situation, I adjusted my watering schedule and allowed the soil to dry out slightly before watering again. Over time, the yellowing leaves gradually improved, and my monstera regained its health.

Observing the location of yellowing leaves and checking the moisture level of the soil can help determine if your monstera is over or underwatered. Adjusting your watering practices accordingly can help promote the health and vitality of your plant.
