How do you garden with chickens?

Gardening with chickens can be a fantastic way to not only enjoy the benefits of a beautiful garden, but also to incorporate the natural behaviors of these feathered friends into your gardening routine. Chickens are excellent tillers, meaning they can help prepare the soil for planting by scratching and loosening the surface. This can save you a lot of time and effort in tilling the soil manually.

One way to utilize their tilling skills is by confining them to a specific area of your garden that needs some preparation. For example, if you have a patch of compacted soil or a new garden bed that needs to be loosened, you can fence off the area and let your chickens do the job. They will scratch and dig, breaking up clumps of soil and incorporating organic matter into it. This action helps to improve soil structure and drainage, making it more conducive to plant growth.

In addition to tilling, chickens are also great at mixing and spreading compost. If you have a compost pile or bin, you can let your chickens explore and scratch through it. As they scratch, they will help to mix the organic material, ensuring proper decomposition and aeration. Their movement also helps to spread the compost around, distributing it more evenly throughout your garden.

Another way to involve chickens in your gardening is by providing them with mulch. Mulch is an excellent addition to any garden as it helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. You can strategically place mulch in areas where you want it, such as around plants or along garden pathways, and allow your chickens access to the area. They will naturally scratch and spread the mulch around as they forage for insects and other goodies. This saves you the effort of spreading mulch manually and ensures it gets distributed evenly.

It’s important to note that while chickens can be helpful in the garden, they can also be destructive if left unsupervised or if allowed access to areas where they shouldn’t be. They have a knack for digging up newly planted seeds or tender seedlings, so it’s crucial to protect your plants until they are established. Using temporary fencing, netting, or chicken wire can help create barriers or enclosures to keep your chickens out of sensitive areas.

In my own gardening experience, I have found that incorporating chickens into my garden has been a delightful and mutually beneficial practice. Not only do they contribute to the health of the soil, but they also provide pest control by eating insects and weed seeds. Additionally, their manure is a valuable source of nutrients for the plants, serving as a natural fertilizer.

Gardening with chickens can be a fun and sustainable approach to tending your garden. By utilizing their natural behaviors and instincts, you can save time and energy while creating a thriving garden ecosystem. Just remember to supervise their activities, protect your plants when needed, and enjoy the rewards of a productive and harmonious garden.
