Does valerian grow in walls?

Valerian can indeed be grown on walls. One particular variety, known as red valerian (Centranthus ruber), is well suited for this purpose. It is a hardy perennial plant that thrives in full sun and is perfect for adding a splash of color and life to walls and banks in your garden.

When choosing a location to grow red valerian, it is important to select a spot that receives plenty of sunlight throughout the day. This plant loves the sun and will perform best when given ample light. If you have a south-facing wall, that would be an ideal spot as it will receive the most sun exposure.

Red valerian is a versatile plant that can also be grown in informal gardens, dry gardens, and wildlife gardens. Its ability to withstand dry conditions makes it a great choice for areas with well-drained soil. It is also attractive to butterflies and bees, making it a valuable addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.

When it comes to caring for red valerian, it is a relatively low-maintenance plant. It does not require much water and can tolerate dry spells once established. However, regular watering during the first few months after planting will help it establish a strong root system. After that, occasional watering during prolonged dry periods should be sufficient.

Red valerian blooms from early summer through early autumn, and in milder areas, it may continue flowering even later. The flowers are typically pink or red in color and are held on long, sturdy stems. They add a vibrant touch to your garden and can attract pollinators, such as butterflies and bees.

To keep your red valerian looking tidy and to prevent it from self-seeding excessively, it is recommended to deadhead the fading flowers. This involves cutting back the spent flower stalks to encourage new growth and prolong the blooming period. If you prefer to allow the plant to self-seed, you can leave some faded flowers on the plant to produce seeds for the next year.

In my personal experience, red valerian has been a fantastic addition to my garden. I have grown it on a sunny wall, and it has thrived, producing a profusion of beautiful flowers throughout the summer. The butterflies and bees it attracts have added an extra level of beauty and activity to my garden. I highly recommend considering red valerian for anyone looking to add color and interest to their walls or banks.
