Does mother-of-thyme like sun or shade?

Mother-of-thyme, also known as Thymus serpyllum, is a versatile ground cover that can thrive in various conditions. When it comes to sunlight, mother-of-thyme prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. This means that planting it in a location where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal. However, if you have a spot in your garden that receives partial shade for a few hours, mother-of-thyme can still grow well there.

In my personal experience, I have planted mother-of-thyme in both full sun and partially shaded areas of my garden. In the full sun areas, the plants grew vigorously, spreading and forming a dense carpet of foliage. They also produced an abundance of delicate pink or purple flowers, which added a beautiful touch to my garden. On the other hand, in the partially shaded areas, the growth was slightly slower, but the plants still thrived and provided ground cover.

One important thing to note is that mother-of-thyme is not suitable for wet or waterlogged sites. It prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate poor soils, making it an excellent choice for areas with less fertile or sandy soil. However, if you have a particularly wet or poorly drained area in your garden, it is best to avoid planting mother-of-thyme there as it may lead to root rot and damage the plant.

To summarize, mother-of-thyme is a low maintenance ground cover that can grow in a variety of soil conditions, including poor and alkaline soils. It prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. Avoid planting it in wet or waterlogged sites to ensure its proper growth and health. With its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in different conditions, mother-of-thyme can be a valuable addition to any garden or landscape.
