Do you need two Nanking Cherry trees?

If you want to have fruit production in your Nanking cherry trees, it is necessary to have more than one plant. Nanking cherries are not self-fertile, which means they cannot pollinate themselves or produce fruit without the assistance of another compatible variety.

Cross pollination occurs when the pollen from one cherry tree is transferred to the flower of another cherry tree. This process allows for the fertilization of the flower and the subsequent development of fruit. Therefore, having at least two Nanking cherry trees or an early flowering plum variety nearby is essential to ensure successful pollination and fruit set.

It is important to choose a compatible pollinator for your Nanking cherry trees. Early flowering plum varieties such as Brookgold, Bounty, or Dandy are often recommended as suitable pollinators for Nanking cherries. These plum varieties bloom at a similar time to Nanking cherries, providing the necessary pollen for cross pollination.

In my own gardening experience, I have found that having multiple Nanking cherry trees or a suitable pollinator nearby greatly increases the chances of fruit production. I initially planted only one Nanking cherry tree, hoping it would produce fruit on its own. However, year after year, I was disappointed with the lack of fruit. It was only after I added a compatible pollinator that I started seeing abundant harvests of delicious cherries.

To ensure effective cross pollination, it is advisable to plant the Nanking cherry trees and their pollinators within close proximity, ideally within 50 feet of each other. This proximity allows for easy transfer of pollen between the trees, increasing the chances of successful pollination.

If you have limited space or prefer a more compact garden, you can consider planting a multi-grafted cherry tree that includes both a Nanking cherry and a compatible pollinator variety on the same tree. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of cross pollination while saving space.

If you desire fruit production in your Nanking cherry trees, it is necessary to have more than one plant or an early flowering plum variety nearby for cross pollination. By ensuring proper pollination, you can maximize the chances of a bountiful harvest of delicious Nanking cherries.
